My Students: Case Studies
Pre-K Student
Sterling
DOB 12/10/2018
Sterling has been a student in our 3K/Pre-K center since 2021 and has been a student in my classroom since September 2022. When I met Sterling, I encountered a charming, welcoming and engaging child. He engages in conversations and enjoys spending most of his Choice Time at the Dramatic Play Center! He enjoys characters from the TV show Paw Patrol and loves Show & Share Time every Friday as he and his mom always do fun things on the weekends!
I have been working with Sterling to address fine motor skills among other skills that include his social emotional development.
Sterling's immediate family consist of himself and his mother. Sterling and his mother are of African American descent and live in Harlem, NY. Sterling is one of the few African American children in my class. Sterling commutes to school daily by car as his mommy drives. Sterling and his mom engage in various activities throughout the week which include special events in their community and birthday parties. They also spend time with extended family and friends who support the family with various activities and engagements.
Pre-K Student
Quincy
DOB 1/24/2018
Quincy has been in our 3K/Pre-K Center since September 2021. She became a student in my class in September 2022. Quincy came in with an IEP consisting of Speech and Hearing Services. She wears hearing aids because of a diagnosed mild hearing loss. When I met Quincy, she appeared to be shy and quiet though within just a few days, she opened up and started to talk and share many things connected to her prior knowledge and experiences in the classroom. Quincy enjoys LOL toys and stuffed animals and enjoys being at the Art Center during Choice Time.
I have been working with Quincy to addres her IEP goals with math by scaffolding her ideas, encouraging her to explain her thinking like a mathematician so that she can explain her thoughts and ideas through language.
Quincy's immediate family consists of her mother, father, 3 year old brother and infant 2 month old brother. Quincy has a nanny who picks her up often from school and is heavily involved in her life. Quincy and her family are of Caucasian descent. Quincy's parents have lived in other states (Kansas and Missouri) before residence in NY. Quincy gets to school by walking as she lives upstairs from our school. Her family and her enjoy family trips to Maine and have extended family who they have come visit or they go visit for holidays and other special occasions.
Pre-K Student
Liam
DOB 1/11/2018
Liam started our 3K/Pre-K Centers in March 2021. He was a new student in my 3K class and has started Pre-K with a sense of confidence and a great amount of skills after initially being perceived to be a bit quiet and shy and so I wanted to target this as I knew that Liam was capable of shining through to break out of his shell. He is highly connected and thrives off visual arts, fine motor abilities and his observed passion of manipulating paintbrushes and any art and writing materials. Liam is a friendly child who can hold conversations about various topics. He loves cartoon character: Sonic the Hedgehog and superheroes. He loves spending time at the Art Center during Choice Time!
Liam's immediate family consist of his mother, father, and 3 year old brother (who is also a student in our 3K/Pre-K Center). Liam's parents are a mix of Brazilian, Paraguayan, French, and Spaniard descent. They commute to school daily by walking as they live right upstairs from our school building. Liam and his family engage in daily art making and spend their time with extended family that live in the city and in other states.
Pre-K Student
Nishka
DOB 10/12/2018
Nishka started attending our 3K/Pre-K Center in October 2022. Nishka came into school with only speaking in her native language, Hindi, as she and her parents had just moved to the USA. Even though no one in the classroom spoke Hindi, her voice was constantly heard. Nishka talked to teachers and her peers about whatever was going on for her in Hindi. She engaged with other children by mostly following particular children and playing alongside them. She also initiated play using toys and gestures. When she first started, she would follow her teachers around (myself and my paraprofessional). As time went on Nishka has started to use some words in English to indicate and understand her awareness of what was going on and so I worked with her to target her English language skills. Nishka enjoys princesses; cartoon character Princess Elsa from movie "Frozen" in particular and spends a lot of her Choice Time in various centers including Art, Music, Dramatic Play, Blocks and Writing.
Nishka's immediate family includes her mother and father. Her parents migrated to the USA from India as her father takes on studies as an MBA student at NYU. Nishka has most of her extended family In India. She commutes to school by walking as she lives in the neighborhood within a 5 block radius.
